Build a Cozy Squirrel Den Box with These Plans

Are you looking to welcome furry friends to your backyard? A squirrel den box offers a safe and comfortable haven for these adorable creatures. Building one is easier than you might think. With a few simple materials and some basic carpentry skills, you can create a cozy home for your local squirrels.

Materials You'll Need

Before you start hammering, make sure you have all the necessary materials on hand:

  • 1x6 inch pine boards (approximately 6 feet long)
  • 1x4 inch pine boards (approximately 6 feet long)
  • 1/2 inch plywood
  • Exterior wood screws (2 1/2 inch)
  • Wood glue
  • Weatherproof paint or stain (optional)
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw (circular, jigsaw, or handsaw)
  • Drill
  • Level
  • Safety glasses

Building the Den Box

Step 1: Cut the Boards

Start by cutting the boards to the following dimensions:

  • Front and Back: Two 1x6 inch boards, 12 inches long
  • Sides: Two 1x6 inch boards, 10 inches long
  • Bottom: One 1x6 inch board, 12 inches long
  • Roof: Two 1x4 inch boards, 14 inches long
  • Entrance: Cut a 4x4 inch opening in one of the front boards (position it about 6 inches from the bottom)

Step 2: Assemble the Walls

Lay the two side boards flat, parallel to each other. Attach the front and back boards to the sides using wood screws and wood glue. Make sure the entrance opening is facing upward.

Step 3: Attach the Bottom

Place the bottom board inside the box, aligning it with the bottom edges of the walls. Secure it to the walls with screws and glue.

Step 4: Build the Roof

Use the two roof boards to create a triangular shape. Connect them at the top using a screw and glue. Then, attach the roof to the top of the box, ensuring a slight overhang on all sides for protection. Use screws and glue to secure the roof.

Step 5: Add a Back Panel

Cut a piece of plywood to the size of the back of the box (12 inches by 10 inches). Secure it to the back of the box with screws. This will help to provide additional support and keep the weather out.

Step 6: Paint or Stain (Optional)

For added durability and aesthetics, you can paint or stain the box with a weatherproof finish. Let the paint or stain dry completely before placing the box.

Placing the Squirrel Den Box

Choose a location that's protected from the elements and provides easy access for squirrels. A tree branch or a fence post are excellent options. Mount the box at least 6 feet off the ground to discourage predators. Fill the box with a small amount of soft bedding material like shredded paper or cloth. Let the squirrels explore their new home!

Enjoy Your New Backyard Friends

With your cozy squirrel den box in place, you'll soon have charming residents making themselves at home. Watching squirrels dart around your yard adds a delightful touch to your outdoor space. Remember to enjoy the company of your furry neighbors and provide them with a safe and comfortable environment to thrive!
